We’ll continue to add new questions as they come up!

How much time should I expect to spend on my fic?

This will vary by author, since we all have different approaches to writing and revision, but assuming you write at a speed of 500 words per hour, it will take you at least 30 hours to write a 15,000 word first draft. Revision and editing may take more or less time, depending on how you work. Start to finish, we’d recommend budgeting at least 50 hours for a fic in the 15-20,000 word range.

That number might look overwhelming at first, but if you write for 30 minutes a day, you’ll have a first draft within two months. You could also write for 60 minutes a few times a week and be done in the same timeframe. Another option is mini retreats, where you set aside a chunk of time just for writing, like Saturday mornings.

If thinking in terms of time isn’t your thing, think of your fic in terms of chapters or outline points, or break it down further into scenes. You can make a list of the scenes you want to include (index cards are great for this too) and check them off as you go.

If people in your life are distracting you, let them know you need uninterrupted writing time. If they won’t honor that and you’re struggling to write, please talk to the mods.

Will you assign prompts?

We don’t assign prompts. You can write about anything you like, and you can begin work immediately. If you need help brainstorming ideas, we have an authors channel on our Discord.

Are poly relationships or other ships allowed? Does Kirk/Spock have to be endgame?

Poly relationships are welcome. And as long as Kirk/Spock (or Kirk & Spock) is central to your fic, you can include any other ships you like. Your work does not have to be endgame Kirk/Spock, though keep in mind that’s probably what our audience will expect. Please tag all ships.

Do you assign beta readers?

We’ll have a list of people who have volunteered to beta that we can give you, or you can ask for a beta on our Discord. You can also use a friend or a beta you’ve worked with before. Betas don’t need to sign up for the challenge.

I’m a writer. Can I pick my own art partner?

Nope, that would kind of defeat the purpose of a big bang. You may not form your own author/artist team for this challenge. Matchups are done anonymously. If your heart is set on working with a friend, please collaborate on your own.

You may choose your own co-writing partner.

Can my fic contain chapters?

We receive this question at least once a round. Yes, you can divide your work into as many chapters as you like! All chapters must be posted on your scheduled posting date.

What if my final fic far exceeds the length I estimated at claims?
